Inspiration for The Red Room experiments come from the world of the David Lynch television series Twin Peaks. I would prepare myself to watch a new episode, hoping there would be another dream sequence and visit to The Black Lodge, a “place of almost unimaginable power, chock full of dark forces and vicious secrets.”

The original version, Spread, was improvised and built with the help of a number of Max devices. The late night experiment enjoyed the appearance of M4L Spiker FXM by Roberto Attanasio, Grain Reverser by Amazing Noises, and Tone Row Generator by Nils Nordmann. Sincere thanks to the generous authors for building these devices.

The six variations (V fold, C fold, Z fold, Double Parallel fold, Engineering fold and Gate fold) were built the following morning and are a result of, you guessed it, folding the music upon itself (much like one would fold a piece of paper). The resulting density ratios are in line with my recent thoughts and analysis of the music of Edgard Varèse. An interesting surprise is that many of the folds require some fragments of the audio to be reversed, creating another connection to the goings-on inside The Red Room.
